MoMA PS1 opens Hard Art on November 5, 2026, a major exhibition examining the legacy of abstract painting by Black artists in the United States from 1969 to today.
More than 40 artists are in the show. Historical paintings by practitioners who came to prominence in the 1970s, including Frank Bowling, Peter Bradley, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Ed Clark, Melvin Edwards, and Sam Gilliam, sit alongside recent work by Aria Dean, Torkwase Dyson, Nikita Gale, Jennie C. Jones, Eric N. Mack, and others.
The work moves beyond the canvas into sculpture, video, and sound, and the argument is clear: for Black artists, abstraction was never separate from the social conditions around it. Form itself carried politics.
New York is in COZĀRT's priority region and this is the art show of the season there. Opens next week.
